The Heart of a
Kandyan Wedding

The Poruwa ceremony is the most sacred and essential ritual of a traditional Sri Lankan wedding. Dating back over 2,500 years to the Kandyan kingdom, this royal tradition symbolizes the union of two families and the blessing of the marriage by the gods and the Triple Gem.

At Ahalepola, we have conducted over 500 Poruwa ceremonies — from intimate family affairs to grand celebrations with 1,000+ guests. Each ceremony is personally reviewed and often conducted by Mr. Suseema Arambewela himself, ensuring every ritual, every chant, every movement is performed with absolute authenticity.

"The Poruwa is not merely a platform of wood and cloth. It is the altar where two souls, two families, and two thousand years of tradition become one. Every couple I have blessed on the Poruwa becomes part of our Ahalepola family."

Sacred Steps of the Poruwa

Each movement, each offering carries centuries of meaning. Our elders guide you through every sacred step.

1

Kavum & Kurahan

The ceremony begins with the offering of traditional sweets and millet to invoke blessings from the gods. The bride's family presents the groom with kavum and kurahan.

2

Jayamangala Gatha

The sacred verses of blessing are chanted by monks, invoking the blessings of the Triple Gem. The eight blessings for prosperity, longevity, and harmony.

3

Tying of Little Fingers

The bride and groom's little fingers are tied with gold thread, symbolizing their eternal bond. Water from the golden pot is poured over their hands seven times.

4

Gift of the Bride

The groom presents the bride with traditional gifts including jewelry, clothing, and the 'Hatana' - a token of his commitment to protect and cherish her.

5

Breaking of Coconut

The groom breaks a king coconut with his sword. The flowing milk represents the abundance and prosperity that will flow through their marriage.

6

Departing the Poruwa

The couple steps down from the Poruwa together, symbolically beginning their journey as one. Elders bless them with betel leaves and offer their well-wishes.
